Pharmaceutics Practicals

The 30 Year 1 Pharmaceutics practicals in the PCI list move from liquid preparations to semisolids, powders, suppositories, and incompatibility recognition. These pages are teaching notes. Moose will review and build the site cards and navigation.

Oral liquids

The first group covers five syrups: Simple Syrup I.P., ephedrine HCl syrup, Vasaka syrup, ferrous phosphate syrup, and orange syrup. Three elixirs follow: piperazine citrate, Cascara, and paracetamol. The two linctus entries compare the standard and pediatric teaching formulas.

Solutions, liniments, suspensions, and emulsions

Five solution entries cover cresol with soap, ferric chloride, aqueous iodine, strong iodine, and ammonium acetate. Two liniments cover turpentine and camphor. Calamine lotion and magnesium hydroxide mixture illustrate suspensions. Cod liver oil and liquid paraffin emulsions introduce the problem of dispersing immiscible liquids. Students should record appearance, process conditions, and checks without treating a teaching sample as a released medicine.

Powders and suppositories

Eutectic, explosive, dusting, and insufflation powders illustrate different physical and safety questions. The explosive example is a document-only hazard exercise. Boric acid and chloral suppositories introduce mould capacity and displacement calculations. The chloral example is a paper or sealed-sample exercise, and neither suppository article claims clinical suitability from appearance alone.

Incompatibilities

The last three entries are physical, chemical, and therapeutic incompatibility. The physical case observes a sealed oil-and-water emulsion. The chemical case identifies an oxidizer with organic ingredients and a repeated source row; it includes no mixing instruction. The therapeutic case checks aspirin and probenecid, then refers the clinical decision to the prescriber. These three cases teach how to recognize a problem and document a hold, not how to improvise a replacement formulation or treatment.

Using the practical pages

Read the pages in PCI syllabus order. Each has an aim, requirements, theory, numbered procedure, observation or calculation, result, and linked references, with a static labelled diagram. Write only measurements and observations actually supplied or obtained. The [practicals index](../.. Moose handles page building and publication.
