Simple Plant Physiology: Demonstration of Transpiration

1. Aim

To use a paired bag observation to demonstrate water loss from leaves. This is one specified teaching example under PCI’s broad “simple plant physiological experiments” entry; the locally assigned experiment is specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.

2. Requirements

Healthy instructor-approved leafy plant, clear bags, ties, matching empty-bag control, labels, timer, notebook, and eye protection if working outdoors. Plant species, leaf number, observation interval, and environmental conditions are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.

3. Theory

Transpiration is water vapour loss from aerial plant surfaces, especially leaves. A clear bag enclosing leaves can trap water vapour that condenses on the inner surface. An empty matched bag helps distinguish plant water loss from ambient condensation. This demonstration is qualitative; droplet amount also depends on temperature, light, humidity, bag seal, and leaf area. PCI does not state a specific physiology experiment, so this documented example should be replaced if the college assigns another named test.

4. Procedure

  1. Confirm the instructor-selected plant and observation period; record exact species, leaf number, and conditions here.
  2. Label one clear bag for a leafy branch and another as an empty matched control.
  3. Enclose the branch without damaging leaves, secure the bag, and place the control nearby under comparable conditions.
  4. Record start time, light, weather, and initial bag appearance.
  5. After the assigned interval, compare condensation in both bags and record the observations before interpreting them.

5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate

No numerical transpiration rate is calculated from this setup. Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed leaf bag has visible droplets and an assumed control bag remains dry at the assumed observation time. These invented observations support a qualitative transpiration interpretation only; actual findings must be recorded here.

6. Result

The actual result and any identification or yield conclusion must be recorded here until the teaching method and observed record are confirmed. Safety note: Do not bag unknown poisonous plants or obstruct public plants. Use teacher-approved specimens and remove the bag after the demonstration.
