Study of Leaf Modifications
1. Aim
To describe the form and possible function of assigned modified leaves using direct observation and a verified reference. The specimen species must be recorded here.
2. Requirements
Instructor-provided plant specimens or models, hand lens, reference images, notebook, and approved dissection tools. Follow the college lab manual and instructor's method sheet for any stain, preservation, or sectioning method.
3. Theory
Leaves may be modified into spines, tendrils, storage scales, traps, or other forms. The organ can still be recognized from its position at a node, association with an axillary bud, venation, or transition to an ordinary leaf on the same shoot. Function must not be inferred solely from appearance; a sharp structure may be a stem thorn rather than a leaf spine. A teaching identification therefore records the attachment and comparative plant context before naming a leaf modification.
4. Procedure
- Record the specimen code and whether the sample includes the supporting shoot.
- Inspect where the unusual structure attaches and locate any nearby bud, node, or ordinary leaf.
- Describe shape, venation, texture, and possible storage, defence, or climbing role.
- Compare with a verified species reference and distinguish leaf-derived structures from stem or root structures.
- Sketch and label observed parts; report the supported interpretation and unresolved features.
5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate
| Observation | Actual teaching record |
|---|---|
| Specimen and shoot context | Record here |
| Attachment at node | Record here |
| Bud or venation evidence | Record here |
| Modified form | Record here |
| Likely function | Record here |
| Verified identification | Record here |
This is an observation exercise. Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed narrow structure attaches at a shoot node and shows a trace of leaf venation. These invented findings illustrate how to argue for a leaf origin; the actual specimen result must be recorded here.
6. Result
The actual result and any identification or yield conclusion must be recorded here until the teaching method and observed record are confirmed. Safety note: Some modified leaves have spines or irritating sap. Handle specimens with instructor guidance and avoid contact with eyes.
