Computer-Based Biology Tutorials
1. Aim
To complete an instructor-selected virtual microscopy or biology tutorial and document what the simulation shows and omits. The selected platform and learning outcomes are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
2. Requirements
Computer or tablet, approved browser and virtual-lab access, instructor worksheet, specimen or slide list, and notebook. Account, accessibility settings, software version, and assigned tutorial are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
3. Theory
A computer tutorial can let students rehearse microscope focus, slide selection, anatomy, and observation recording without a live specimen. The image or model may be a photograph, drawing, or simulation; its scale and detail vary. A virtual zoom is not automatically the same as optical magnification. The student should cite the platform, record the slide or module identifier, and distinguish simulated controls from actions available on a physical microscope. This PCI entry is broad, so a university virtual microscope is offered as an example rather than a universal prescribed platform.
4. Procedure
- Confirm the approved platform, module, accessibility needs, and worksheet before starting.
- Open the assigned virtual microscope or biology model and record its title, version if visible, and slide code.
- Practice locating a specimen at low virtual magnification, then use the available focus or zoom controls.
- Record visible structures and any on-screen scale or limitations, taking a screenshot if permitted.
- Complete the instructor questions and compare the virtual sequence with the physical-lab workflow.
5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate
| Observation | Actual teaching record |
|---|---|
| Platform and module | Record here |
| Slide or model identifier | Record here |
| Controls used | Record here |
| Structures observed | Record here |
| Scale or limitation | Record here |
| Worksheet conclusion | Record here |
No numerical magnification is invented. Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed virtual plant-cell slide shows a cell wall and assumed central vacuole. These invented observations illustrate note-taking; the actual module findings must be recorded here.
6. Result
Record actual observations here when the verified method and record are available. Safety note: Use approved educational sites and avoid entering patient or student personal data into a public simulator. Follow normal screen and accessibility guidance.
