Stereo Model Study: Trans Alkene

1. Aim

To construct or inspect a substituted trans alkene model and identify the opposite-side relationship of a specified pair of comparable substituents. This is the sixth named PCI section III model topic. The assigned example is specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet. [1]

2. Requirements

Approved substituted-alkene model kit or preassembled cis and trans pair, distinct substituent labels, orientation card, observation sheet, supervisor, and ordinary room protective equipment. No chemicals are needed. The particular alkene and comparison pair must be recorded here. [2]

3. Theory

A trans description applies when the chosen comparable substituents occupy opposite sides of an alkene double bond and each double-bond carbon has two different groups. Restricted rotation preserves that arrangement unless the bonding changes. Flipping or turning an entire model in space changes the viewer perspective but does not convert a trans isomer into its cis partner. The assigned comparable pair must be named explicitly. If four different groups make cis-trans wording ambiguous, E/Z nomenclature based on priority is the proper next step and needs a verified teaching example. [2]

4. Procedure

  1. Inspect the assigned substituent labels and check that each double-bond carbon has two different groups.
  2. Name the two comparable groups before deciding whether the model is trans.
  3. Assemble or inspect the assigned model and orient it beside the reference card.
  4. Record whether the compared groups lie on opposite sides of the double bond.
  5. Rotate the entire model without changing connections and confirm that the relationship is unchanged.
  6. Compare it with a cis model if available, noting that changing between them requires more than whole-model rotation.
  7. Record the valid label or an E/Z referral if the pair is not suitable for simple cis-trans naming.

5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate

Model observation Actual teaching record
Distinct groups at each carbon Record here
Compared substituent pair Record here
Opposite-side relation Record here
Whole-model rotation effect Record here

Pre-assumed observations for explanation only: matching labelled groups lie on opposite sides while both double-bond carbons carry different groups. The assigned comparison supports trans. A real model identity and any E/Z label must be recorded here. This section records shape or orientation rather than a synthesis yield. No reagent-volume or product-mass calculation is required.

6. Result

Report the named geometry or stereochemical relationship only after comparing the actual model with the cited reference and the instructor's labels. The submitted model result must be recorded here. Safety note: Use model pieces under supervision, keep connectors intact, and do not confuse moving the whole model with rotating one end across a double bond.
