Stereo Model Study: Inversion of Configuration

1. Aim

To use a physical stereocentre model to demonstrate inversion of spatial arrangement during a backside substitution concept. Inversion of configuration is the seventh named PCI section III model topic. The exact labelled model and assignment must be recorded here. [1]

2. Requirements

Instructor-approved tetrahedral stereocentre model with four distinguishable substituent labels, a removable leaving-group connector and replacement label, observation sheet, orientation card, supervisor, and any room-required protective equipment. No reaction is performed and no reagents are used. Specific labels and any absolute-configuration assignment are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet. [2]

3. Theory

A tetrahedral carbon with four different attached groups can be stereogenic. In a backside substitution model, an incoming group approaches from the side opposite the leaving group and the spatial arrangement at the carbon is inverted. This is commonly called Walden inversion. Inversion describes geometry at the centre; an R-to-S or S-to-R label change is not guaranteed, because replacing a substituent can change the priority order used for absolute configuration. A model exercise should therefore track spatial positions before assigning any letter descriptor. Merely rotating the entire model cannot invert it. [2]

4. Procedure

  1. Confirm that the model centre has four distinguishable substituent labels.
  2. Place the starting model in a fixed orientation and record the locations of all labels.
  3. Identify the leaving-group position and the opposite approach direction using the instructor card.
  4. Model removal and replacement only with approved physical pieces; do not carry out a chemical substitution.
  5. Compare the final spatial arrangement with the starting arrangement from the same orientation.
  6. Separate the claim of geometric inversion from any R/S label assignment; apply priority rules only if supplied and verified.
  7. Record the inference and return the pieces without losing labels.

5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate

Model observation Actual teaching record
Four distinct starting labels Record here
Opposite approach direction Record here
Spatial inversion observed Record here
R/S priorities checked Record here

Pre-assumed observations for explanation only: the replacement enters opposite the labelled leaving position and the remaining three labels reverse their local spatial relationship. This demonstrates inversion at the centre. Whether the formal R/S descriptor changes must be recorded here for the actual labels. This section records shape or orientation rather than a synthesis yield. No reagent-volume or product-mass calculation is required.

6. Result

Report the named geometry or stereochemical relationship only after comparing the actual model with the cited reference and the instructor's labels. The submitted model result must be recorded here. Safety note: This is a model-only teaching exercise. No substitution reagents are used. Keep small pieces contained and follow ordinary teaching-room supervision.
