Preparation of Potash Alum
1. Aim
To crystallize potash alum from verified aluminium and potassium sources in a supervised teaching lab. The starting salts, hydrate form, and product identity checks are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
2. Requirements
Approved aluminium and potassium starting materials, specified acid or solvent, water, heated vessel, stirrer, filtration and crystallization equipment, balance, drying setup, and protective equipment. Exact reagent identities, masses, temperatures, and timing are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
3. Theory
Potash alum is a potassium aluminium double sulphate hydrate. When the correct ions are present in a suitable hot solution, cooling can form characteristic crystals. Product mass alone does not establish the desired hydrate or purity; the ion content and crystallization conditions must be checked. Different teaching methods start from different aluminium sources, so this article does not invent a universal reagent recipe.
4. Procedure
- Identify the approved preparation route, starting compounds, target hydrate, and safety controls; missing conditions are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
- Prepare the potassium and aluminium-containing solutions under the chosen teaching protocol.
- Combine and clarify the hot solution according to the verified sequence.
- Cool without disturbance for the specified period and collect the alum crystals.
- Dry and weigh the product, then record appearance and approved potassium, aluminium, and sulphate identity observations.
5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate
| Observation | Actual teaching record |
|---|---|
| Starting material identities and masses | Record here |
| Approved solution conditions | Record here |
| Crystal appearance | Record here |
| Dry product mass | Record here |
| Identity tests | Record here |
| Theoretical and percentage yield | Record here |
Assumed values for practice only: assume an assumed theoretical yield of 4.00 g of the verified potash alum hydrate and an assumed dry collected mass of 3.20 g. These invented masses illustrate yield arithmetic only.
- Illustrative yield = assumed 3.20 g ÷ assumed 4.00 g × 100 = 80.0%.
- Actual theoretical yield and product identity must be recorded here until the starting route, formula, masses, and confirmatory tests are known.
6. Result
The actual result and decision must be recorded here until the method and measured record are confirmed. Safety note: Hot acidic solutions and glassware can burn. Use supervised heating and crystallization; do not apply the crystals to people or consume them.
