Preparation of Boric Acid from Borax

1. Aim

To prepare and isolate boric acid crystals from borax under a verified teaching-lab method. The borax hydrate, reagent quantities, and purity checks are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.

2. Requirements

Assigned borax, approved acid, suitable water, heated vessel, stirrer, hot-filtration setup, crystallization dish, balance, drying setup, protective equipment, and boron waste vessel. Exact masses, acid strength, temperature, and drying conditions are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.

3. Theory

Acidification converts dissolved tetraborate into boric acid. Cooling a sufficiently concentrated solution can crystallize boric acid while more soluble by-products remain largely in the mother liquor. Hot filtration removes insoluble matter before crystallization; excessive washing or warm wash water reduces yield. Theoretical yield depends on the actual hydrate of the starting borax, so a formula cannot be silently assumed.

4. Procedure

  1. Verify borax hydrate, approved acid, stoichiometric quantities, temperature limits, and identity or purity checks; unresolved details are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
  2. Under instructor supervision, dissolve the assigned borax in the specified warm water.
  3. Add the approved acid in the validated manner while controlling heat and splashing.
  4. Filter as directed, cool the clear solution, and allow crystals to form.
  5. Collect, wash, dry, and weigh the product by the specified method. Record appearance and calculate yield only from verified reactant and product forms.

5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate

Identity or purity observation Record here
Percentage yield Record here

Assumed values for practice only: assume the method worksheet verifies an assumed theoretical boric-acid yield of 3.50 g and an assumed isolated dry mass of 2.80 g. These invented values are not reagent instructions or observed masses.

  1. Illustrative percentage yield = assumed 2.80 g ÷ assumed 3.50 g × 100 = 80.0%.
  2. The actual theoretical yield and purity must be recorded here until the borax hydrate, reagent mass, and product mass are known.

6. Result

The actual result and decision must be recorded here until the method and measured record are confirmed. Safety note: Acid addition to warm solution can splash. Use instructor supervision, eye protection, and approved hot-glass handling. The isolated product is not for therapeutic use.
