Identity Test for Ferrous Sulphate

1. Aim

To check an assigned ferrous sulphate sample for the required ferrous and sulphate identities. The controlling monograph, hydrate, and exact tests are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.

2. Requirements

Assigned ferrous sulphate, water, approved iron(II) confirmation reagent, approved sulphate confirmation reagent, suitable acid medium, separate test tubes, pipettes, controls, eye protection, and iron waste vessel. Exact quantities, concentrations, and order are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.

3. Theory

A complete identity check needs evidence for both ferrous iron and sulphate. An iron(II) complexing reagent can produce a characteristic colour, whereas a sulphate test can yield an insoluble barium sulphate precipitate under its prescribed acidic conditions. Oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron during storage or sample preparation can change the iron response. A positive colour alone does not establish the salt hydrate or purity. The IQ City manual lists several iron reactions; the instructor must choose the monograph-approved one and record the controls.

4. Procedure

  1. Check the sample label, hydrate form, and current monograph. Record the required ferrous and sulphate tests; obtain missing instructions from the approved local method.
  2. Prepare fresh sample portions using the approved water and acid conditions.
  3. Apply the verified ferrous-ion reagent to one portion and compare its response with the required control.
  4. Test a separate treated portion for sulphate using the approved reagent and blank.
  5. Record observed colour or precipitate, timing, and any interference; conclude identity only when all prescribed tests agree.

5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate

No quantitative assay is calculated. Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed fresh sample gives the prescribed ferrous colour and an assumed separate portion gives a sulphate precipitate. These are invented classroom observations, not findings from a tested material. The actual identity remains Record here until the monograph and real control results are recorded.

6. Result

Record the actual result here only when the method and measurements are confirmed. The product decision is made by the qualified reviewer against the assigned current monograph or approved method and recorded in the student record. This page decides nothing: it does not pass, fail, identify, or release any sample. Safety note: Iron reagents and acids can irritate. Use supervised small-scale testing and collect any barium-containing sulphate-test waste separately.
