Identity Test for Barium Sulphate
1. Aim
To interpret the prescribed identity tests for an assigned barium sulphate sample, including its low water solubility and the required barium and sulphate confirmations. Exact monograph reactions are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
2. Requirements
Assigned barium sulphate sample or instructor-supplied identity record, water, approved sample-treatment reagents, validated barium and sulphate confirmation reagents, test tubes, filter tools, protective equipment, and barium waste vessel. Exact fusion or dissolution method, reagent concentrations, and quantities are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
3. Theory
Barium sulphate is very sparingly soluble in water. A direct test on an undissolved powder may not expose enough ions for ordinary aqueous barium or sulphate reactions. A validated monograph sample-treatment step is therefore needed before ion confirmations. Its low solubility is a useful property but not a complete identity proof, because many white powders are poorly soluble. Barium and sulphate outcomes must be considered together with blank and reference controls.
4. Procedure
- Obtain the controlling barium sulphate monograph and approved sample-treatment route; do not improvise a fusion or strong-acid digestion.
- Record appearance and the prescribed water-solubility observation.
- Have trained staff prepare the sample solution or treated fraction using the verified method, or use a supplied teaching record.
- Run the specified barium and sulphate confirmation tests with suitable controls on separate portions.
- Record each observation and conclude identity only if the required set agrees with the monograph.

No numerical concentration is calculated. Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed white sample remains largely undissolved in water, and assumed treated portions give the assigned barium and sulphate responses. These invented observations are not proof for a real sample. The actual identity must be recorded here after the monograph method and real records are supplied.
6. Result
Record the actual result here only when the stated conditions and observations are confirmed. The monograph decision is made by the qualified reviewer against the assigned current monograph or approved method and recorded in the student record. This page decides nothing: it does not pass, fail, identify, or release any sample. Safety note: Soluble barium compounds formed during treatment can be toxic. Any hot digestion or fusion belongs to trained staff under institutional controls. Collect barium waste separately.
