Introduction to Pharmacognosy Laboratory and Experiments
1. Aim
To become familiar with the pharmacognosy laboratory, its specimen records, microscopy workflow, and safe handling before detailed crude-drug study. Local equipment and assigned specimens are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
2. Requirements
Approved specimen containers, microscope and prepared slides, hand lens, botanical reference, labels, observation sheet, gloves and protective equipment, waste instructions. Instrument models, chemicals, and specimen identities are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
3. Theory
Pharmacognosy studies natural materials used as drugs and the evidence needed to identify and assess them. A specimen label should connect a botanical name, plant part, source, and batch record. Macroscopic characters can be observed with the eye or hand lens; powder and section microscopy can reveal diagnostic tissue features. Neither a single visual trait nor an unverified common name establishes identity. Safety matters because some crude drugs are toxic, allergenic, or contaminated. The first class should teach documentation and limitations before any destructive testing.
4. Procedure
- Review the laboratory safety rules, specimen access rules, and incident reporting route with the instructor.
- Identify the microscope, slide storage, specimen cabinets, and waste locations without opening unknown containers.
- Select one instructor-approved labelled specimen and transcribe its botanical name, part used, and batch code exactly.
- Observe its visible colour, form, surface, and odour only if the instructor has approved smelling; never taste it.
- Inspect a prepared reference slide and record which observations support or limit identity.

Assumed observations for practice only: an assumed labelled leaf specimen has an assumed green-brown colour and an assumed prominent midrib. These invented notes show the record format only. The real specimen and identity are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
6. Output or final result
Submit a specimen and equipment log with observed features and uncertainty. Actual specimen identification: Record here.
Teaching-lab safety: Handle only instructor-approved material. Do not taste plant material, inhale powders, or infer that a medicinal plant is safe to consume.
This page is a supervised-activity guide; it does not report a completed case.
