Adsorption Power of Heavy Kaolin
1. Aim
To evaluate adsorption by an assigned heavy kaolin sample using a validated indicator uptake or residual-colour method. The required method, dye, and criterion are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
2. Requirements
Assigned heavy kaolin, verified dye reference and blank, approved water or buffer, mixing vessel, timer, filtration or centrifugation equipment, colour comparator or spectrophotometer, balance, and dye waste container. Exact dye concentration, masses, mixing time, pH, and wavelength are specified in your college lab manual and instructor's method sheet.
3. Theory
Kaolin surfaces can adsorb a dissolved dye, lowering the dye remaining in solution. An adsorption-power method compares the starting dye quantity with the quantity left after contact with a measured mass of kaolin. Dye identity, pH, surface treatment, contact time, and separation can all change the apparent capacity. PCI names this exercise but does not define a unique numerical method, so the controlling local laboratory standard must be specified before a result is interpreted.
4. Procedure
- Obtain the instructor-approved heavy-kaolin adsorption method, dye standardization, blank, and acceptance criterion; unresolved items are to be recorded from the assigned current monograph or approved college method in the student record.
- Prepare and label a dye control, process blank, and kaolin test using the specified quantities.
- Mix the kaolin and dye for the validated contact time and separate the solid without losing supernatant.
- Measure residual colour by the specified visual or instrumental method, with a matched blank and calibration if required.
- Calculate dye removed per mass of kaolin only if the method supplies a valid concentration relation; otherwise report the prescribed comparison.
5. Calculation, graph, or images as appropriate
| Observation | Actual teaching record |
|---|---|
| Kaolin grade and mass | Record here |
| Dye identity and starting amount | Record here |
| Contact pH and time | Record here |
| Blank and residual colour | Record here |
| Calculated dye uptake | Record here |
| Verified acceptance criterion | Record here |
Assumed values for practice only: assume assumed dye initially present is 2.00 mg, assumed dye remaining after contact is 0.80 mg, and assumed kaolin mass is 0.500 g. These invented amounts illustrate arithmetic and are not a test recipe.
- Illustrative dye removed = assumed 2.00 minus assumed 0.80 = 1.20 mg.
- Illustrative uptake = 1.20 mg รท assumed 0.500 g = 2.40 mg/g.
- Actual adsorption power must be recorded here because measured concentrations and the method calibration are unavailable.
6. Result
Record the actual result here only when the method and measurements are confirmed. The product decision is made by the qualified reviewer against the assigned current monograph or approved method and recorded in the student record. This page decides nothing: it does not pass, fail, identify, or release any sample. Safety note: Avoid kaolin dust and dye contact. Keep the colourant and any solvent waste in the assigned laboratory stream.
